Seven reasons your shoes hurt — and only one of them is your feet.

If your feet are wide, someone has told you to buy a size up. It is the most common advice in footwear and it is the reason your heels slip, your shoes crease in the wrong place, and half your wardrobe goes unworn.

Here is what is actually going on — and the one measurement that settles it.

  1. Going up a size does not make a shoe wider

    A full size up gives you roughly three millimetres across the ball of your foot — and eight millimetres of length you never asked for. You have been paying in fit to buy a fraction of the width you actually needed.

  2. That is why your heel slips

    A shoe with too much length in front of the toes pivots as you walk. The lift at the back you long ago decided was normal is the shoe telling you it is the wrong length — not that you walk oddly.

  3. And why they crease in the wrong place

    The shoe bends behind the ball of your foot instead of across it. It creases where it was never meant to fold, looks tired within a season, and never properly breaks in.

  4. Your wardrobe quietly shrank

    You stopped buying certain styles. You wear the same two pairs. Not because you prefer them — because they are the only ones that do not hurt by three in the afternoon.

  1. Put a sheet of paper on a hard floor against a wall and stand on it, heel touching the wall.
  2. Mark the paper at your longest toe. Measure from the wall edge to that mark — that is your length.
  3. Mark both sides at the widest part, across the ball of your foot. Measure between them — that is your width.
  4. Do both feet and use the larger one. Measure in the afternoon; feet spread through the day.

Reason six

Width is decided before the shoe exists.

A last is the foot-shaped form a shoe is built around. Standard last, standard width — which is why sizing up is the only lever most brands give you. Ours starts wide. Same room in every size, without any of the extra length. Same foot below, two different shoes.
